Pennsylvania Bingo Rules

  • Regular game prize: up to $500
  • Jackpot game prize: up to $4,000
  • Daily prize total per group: up to $8,000
  • How often: no limit on frequency for a licensed group since Act 66 of 2017
  • Who can run it: licensed nonprofits that have existed for about two years
  • License: applied for through the county, usually the county treasurer
  • Players under 18: allowed only with an adult

The details behind each limit:

Pennsylvania legalized charity bingo with its Bingo Law, signed on July 10, 1981 (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Before that, bingo was technically illegal gambling that police mostly tolerated. The original limits were $250 a game, a $2,000 jackpot and $4,000 a day. They have been raised since.

Under the current law, as summarized by one county treasurer’s office, a single regular game can pay up to $500, a jackpot game up to $4,000, and a group can award up to $8,000 in prizes in one calendar day. Since a 2017 change (Act 66), there is no limit on how often a licensed group may hold bingo (Elk County Bingo FAQ, Act 66 of 2017).

Only nonprofit groups can hold a license, such as volunteer fire and ambulance companies, religious, charitable, fraternal, veterans and civic groups, and a group generally has to have existed for two years first. That is why so many Pennsylvania games are run by fire companies, parishes, Legion posts and clubs. Licenses are applied for through the county, usually at the county treasurer’s office, and bingo is played at the group’s licensed location.

Pennsylvania Bingo FAQ

Are there bingo halls in Pennsylvania?

Yes, but most are not full-time halls. Pennsylvania bingo is mainly weekly games at volunteer fire companies, parish halls, Legion and VFW posts and social clubs, plus seasonal events and a few larger halls in Philadelphia.

Who can run bingo in Pennsylvania?

Only licensed nonprofit groups, such as fire companies, religious, charitable, fraternal, veterans and civic organizations. They apply through their county, usually the county treasurer.

What age do I need to be to play?

Under the state law, players under 18 may play only if an adult is with them. Halls can set stricter rules. Holy Guardian Angels in Reading requires anyone under 18 to be with an adult, and the Lisburn fire company sets a minimum age of 12.

How much can a bingo game pay in Pennsylvania?

Up to $500 for a regular game and up to $4,000 for a jackpot game, with a daily total of $8,000 for the group running the game, according to county guidance on the Bingo Law.

Do Pennsylvania bingo halls take credit cards?

Some do. The Bushkill Township fire company in Nazareth accepts cash and credit cards and has an ATM. Many fire hall games are cash only, so ask when you call.

Why call before I go?

Fire company games shift with the season, skip carnival weeks and holidays, and cancel for bad weather. A short call saves a wasted trip.
