How to Use the Bingo Payout Calculator

You only need a few numbers, and a good guess is fine for each one.

  • Players in the hall. Count the room, or ask at the door.
  • Average spend per player. What most people pay for their cards or pack for the whole session.
  • Payout percentage. The share of card sales the hall pays back as prizes. If you do not know it, leave it at 70 and ask the caller or the front desk.
  • Games in the session. Count the games listed on the program.
  • What you spend. Your own buy-in for the session.

How Bingo Payouts Work

Every bingo session works the same way underneath. Players buy cards, the hall adds up the sales, and a set share goes back out as prizes. That share is the payout percentage. The rest stays with the hall or the charity to pay for the room, the supplies, the license and the cause the game supports.

Prize pool = card sales × payout percentage

Take 100 players who spend $20 each. Card sales are $2,000. At a 70% payout, $1,400 goes back to players and $600 stays with the hall. Spread over 10 games, the average prize is $140.

The percentage changes from hall to hall and from state to state. As one data point, the Texas bingo regulator reported that prizes came to about 76% of gross receipts statewide in 2017, a figure that includes pull-tabs (Texas 2017 bingo annual report). A small parish game may pay back less, and a busy hall may pay back more.

If your hall posts fixed prizes

Many halls post set prizes, such as $50 a game and $500 for the coverall, and do not quote a percentage. To use the calculator, add up the posted prizes and divide by the card sales you expect. For example, $1,000 in posted prizes on $1,600 in sales is a 62.5% payout.

Jackpots and coveralls

Most sessions do not pay every game equally. A jackpot or coverall game at the end of the night often takes a large slice of the prize pool, so the regular games pay less than the average shown above. A progressive jackpot rolls over and grows each session until someone wins it within a set number of calls.

Your Odds of Winning at Bingo

Every card in play has the same chance of winning a game. Your odds come down to one thing: your share of the cards in the room. If you hold 6 of the 600 cards in play, your chance in that game is 6 in 600, or 1 in 100.

The calculator uses money as a stand-in for cards. When every card costs the same, your share of the spending equals your share of the cards.

  • A bigger crowd means a bigger prize and lower odds. The two cancel each other out.
  • More cards raise your chance of winning. They also raise what you spend by the same amount, so your average return per dollar does not change.
  • On average, bingo pays back less than you put in. At a 70% payout, every $20 spent returns $14 on average. The other $6 is the price of the night out, and at a charity hall it is what the cause earns.

When two players win the same game

If two or more players call bingo on the same number, the prize is split evenly between them. A $140 game with two winners pays $70 each. Splits happen more often in a full hall, because more cards are in play.

Running a Bingo Fundraiser

Tap “I’m running a game” at the top of the calculator. Two more boxes appear: the share of the prize pool you hold back for a jackpot game, and your other costs for the night, such as hall rent, cards, daubers and the license fee. The calculator then shows what each regular game pays, what the jackpot pays, and how much is left for your cause.

Watch the break-even number at the bottom. It tells you how many players you need before the night covers its costs. If you promise fixed prizes, you carry the risk on a slow night, so check that number against the smallest crowd you could realistically get. With a percentage payout the prizes shrink along with the crowd, and the prizes alone can never cost you more than you take in.

Most states require a license or registration to run charity bingo, and many limit the prize for a single game or for a whole session. Check with your state’s charitable gaming office before you print a program. To see how licensed games near you set their prices and prizes, browse the bingo hall guides by state.

Taxes on Bingo Winnings in the United States

In the United States, all gambling winnings count as taxable income, bingo included, whether or not you receive a tax form. For prizes paid in 2026, a hall must issue Form W-2G when a single bingo prize is $2,000 or more, and that amount is not reduced by what you paid for your cards. The threshold was $1,200 before 2026, and it now adjusts for inflation each year.

Regular gambling withholding does not apply to bingo. The hall must hold back 24% only if a winner of a reportable prize does not give a taxpayer identification number. Source: IRS Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754. This is general information, not tax advice.

Bingo Payout Questions

What percentage does bingo pay out?

It depends on the hall and the state. Texas reported about 76% statewide in 2017, including pull-tabs. Ask the hall, or work it out yourself by dividing the posted prizes by the card sales.

How is a bingo prize calculated?

Card sales multiplied by the payout percentage gives the prize pool. The pool is then divided among the games, and jackpot or coverall games usually take a larger share.

Does buying more bingo cards improve my odds?

Yes. Your chance in each game equals your share of the cards in play. More cards also cost more, so your average return per dollar stays the same.

What happens if two people call bingo at the same time?

The prize is split evenly among the winners.

Do I pay tax on bingo winnings?

In the United States, yes. All winnings are taxable income. A hall issues Form W-2G for a single bingo prize of $2,000 or more in 2026.
