Bingo Hall Guide for the Northwest Territories

Bingo in the Northwest Territories is charity bingo, and a lot of it is played at home on cable TV. The regular games are in Yellowknife, where the Elks run a TV bingo five nights a week and a Sunday game at the Tree of Peace, and in Inuvik, on community Channel 22. Last checked: October 2026. We could confirm only 3 regular games in the territory, each from the organizer’s own website. We found no weekly public game in Hay River, Fort Smith or the smaller communities. Volunteers run these nights, and channels and days do change, so a quick call before you go is wise.

Hay River, Fort Smith and Smaller Communities

We found no weekly public bingo for 2025 or 2026 in Hay River, Fort Smith, Behchoko, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells or the other smaller Northwest Territories communities. Hay River lost its radio bingo when CKHR went off the air after a 2019 fire in its highrise studio building. The CRTC revoked the station’s licence in January 2026. The Hay River Elks’ TV bingo stopped after the March 2019 Mackenzie Place highrise fire. In Fort Smith, bingo is a festival night: the 2026 Wood Buffalo Frolics closed with games worth $7,000 in all. Both towns issue their own lottery licences, and Fort Smith Town Hall is at 872-8400.

Northwest Territories Bingo Rules

  • Who regulates it: the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), Government of the Northwest Territories, under the Lotteries Act and the Lotteries Regulations; 16 communities issue their own lottery licences: Aklavik, Behchoko, Deline, Fort Good Hope, Fort McPherson, Fort Smith, Hay River, Inuvik, Norman Wells, Paulatuk, Tsiigehtchic, Tuktoyaktuk, Tulita, Ulukhaktok, Whati and Yellowknife
  • Local by-laws: in Yellowknife and Aklavik the territorial regulations do not apply to lottery licensing; Yellowknife uses its Lottery Licence By-law No. 4092, Hay River its Lottery License By-law No. 2349 and Fort Smith its Bylaw 1037
  • Who may run bingo: a charitable or religious organization, registered under the Income Tax Act or the Societies Act or designated by the Minister, or an agricultural fair or exhibition
  • Minimum age: no general minimum in the territorial regulations; the Minister may set an age limit for a game at the licence holder’s request, posted at the hall. In Yellowknife no one under 16 may play bingo. Nevada tickets are 16 and over, and casino areas 19 and over
  • Prize limits: no more than $30,000 in prizes for a single lottery without the Minister’s approval; a series with over $100,000 in prizes needs an audited report. In Yellowknife a Super Bingo is one with over $50,000 in prizes
  • How often: one bingo a week per licence holder; a series licence runs no more than six months, and no group may hold more than five licences in six months. Yellowknife may refuse a group that already has two bingo licences in the same Sunday to Saturday week
  • Liquor: none may be served, sold or consumed in the bingo area; if the building serves liquor, volunteers must keep it out of the bingo area
  • Radio and TV bingo: the licence is kept at the station’s offices for anyone to see; Nevada tickets sold with a radio or TV bingo go only to card holders, on the day of the game, before the broadcast starts

MACA explains who licenses what on its lottery licensing page. The bingo rules are in Part II of the Lotteries Regulations. Yellowknife’s own rules, including the age limit of 16, are in its Lottery Licence By-law. Every printed bingo ad must show the licence number. Rules in the neighbouring territories differ, so see our Yukon bingo guide or the Canada bingo hub.
